Shri K. G. Subramaniam
Visual Art Painting

Painter, sculptor, muralist. Trained at Kala Bhavan, Shantiniketan, under the tutelage of Nandalal Bose, Binod Behari Mukherjee and Ram Kinkar Baij. Studied also at the Slade School of Art, London. Influenced by this exposure to Modernism, he fused it with his own work, essentially rooted in an indigenous folk tradition. Admirably assimilating the touch and feel that he experienced in his journey and yet remarkably reflecting the texture and nuances of life as he saw it. In the late 70's his brush strokes shifted to the two-century-old vibrant tradition of reverse painting. Breathing a new life into the medium.

An artist of immeasurable talent, he broke down the boundaries between the artist and the artisan. He gleefully experimented with weaving and even toy making. His prolific talent and tremendous vitality have kept him in the forefront of art for now over four decades. His works are an inspiration as they uniquely combine emotions, romanticism, wit and sensuality. An eminent writer on Indian art, his writings have formed the basis for the study of Indian art.
