Pandit Shivkumar Sharma
Lifetime achievement in Hindustani Instrumental Music - Santoor

Born in Jammu in 1938, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma is the only son of Pandit Uma Dutt Sharma, a famous vocalist and tabla player from Jammu and Kashmir. In 1955, Shivji brought the Santoor from Jammu valley to the then Bombay city.

Many connoisseurs found this unique instrument fascinating as it was found to be an improved version of the ancient Shatatantri Veena - the Veena with hundred strings.

Shivji has single handedly popularized the Santoor on a national and international level. As a music director along with Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia, the duo SHIV HARI, have given us immortal songs from Silsila, Lamhe & Darr. Shivji has countless long playing records, compact discs and albums to his credit in his illustrious career and is rated as one of the finest instrumentalists India has produced.

Recipient of Sangit Natak Academy Award, he has been bestowed with a Padma Shri in 1991 and Padma Vibhushan in 2001, apart from innumerable national and international accolades.
