Pandit Birju Maharaj
Lifetime Achievement in Classical Dance

Born in 1937, into a well-known kathak dancing family, Pandit Birju Maharaj, is a master of the kathak style, and a leading exponent of the Kalka-Bindadin gharana of Lucknow.

He began performing as a child with his father, Acchan Maharaj. From the age of 9, he began training with his uncles, Shambhu and Lacchu Maharaj. His mastery of the dance form had won him the coveted Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards, when he was just 28.

As a singer he excels in his renditions of thumris and dadras and plays the naal, the tabla, and the violin. He has composed music and sang for two classical dance sequences in the film "Shatranj ke Khilari" & "The Chess Players".

Pt Birju Maharaj has been bestowed with the Padma Vibhushan, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the Kalidas Samman, an honorary Doctorate from the Banaras Hindu University & Khairagarh University, the Lata Mangeshkar Puraskaar, a National Award for best Choreography in the film "Vishwaroopam", among many others.
