Her Guru - her father, Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar. Sitting by his feet, she began learning vocal music as a five-year-old child. Deeply influenced by her father's recitals and K. L. Saigal's mellifluous renditions. Started her career as a singer and actress. Sang her first song in 1942. Three years down the line, began training in Hindustani Classical music under the tutelage of Ustad Amanat Ali Khan Bhendibazaarwale. Learnt under Amanat Khan Devaswale and Pandit Tulsidas Sharma as well. Her first concert overseas - Royal Albert Hall, London, in 1974.

Versatile. Evolved her own distinctive singing style. She reigns supreme as the undisputed queen of Indian music. Won her first National Film Award in 1973. Recipient of the prestigious Padma Bhushan (1969), Padma Vibhushan (1999) and the Dada Saheb Phalke Award (1989) for her stellar contribution to Indian music. The second vocalist to have received the Bharat Ratna (2001), India's highest civilian honour. Her signature - timeless. A non pareil artist.
