Guru Shri Kelucharan Mahapatra
Classical Dance (Odissi)

Synonymous with Odissi dance, the world over. Learnt to paint, sculpt and play khola (drum) as a nine-year-old. His father, himself a khola player in the open-air theatres of Orissa, sent him to train under Bala Bhadra Sahu and Guru Shri Mohan Sunder Goswami and his theatre group. Was under Guru Goswami's tutelage for almost 12 years. Subsequently joined Kavichandra Kalichandra Pattnaik's Annapurna Theatre in Cuttack. Mastered Uday Shankar's dance techniques.

Founded "Srjan" in 1993 to train students in Odissi dance. A premier institute in India, it symbolizes the classicism of Odissi dance, fused with contemporary choreography and compositions to keep the dance system alive and popular. Among his students - Sonal Mansingh, Sanjukta Panigrahi, Kumkum Mohanty, Protima Bedi, Jhelum Paranjpe, Yamini Krishnamurthy.

Recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1966), Padma Shri (1974), Padma Bhushan (1988), Padma Vibhushan (2000), Kalidas Samman from Madhya Pradesh Government.
