Shri Ronu Mazmudar
Classical Instrumental (Flute)

Born in Benaras on June 20, 1963, the 36 year-old Rabendranath, now popularly recognized by his house name" Ronu, is rightly hailed as one of India's front-ranking flautists. A powerhouse performer, Ronu is solidly rooted in the Maiher Gharana, which boasts of musical maestros like Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. Ronu learnt to play the flute in childhood from his father Dr.Bhanu Majumdar, but later switched to vocal music under the tutelage of the late Pandit Laxman Prasad Jaipurwale Sensing his shishya's potential as a flautist, Laxmanji made Ronu go back to the bansuri, a decision that set the young shagird on the road to higher accomplishments as an instrumentalist of repute. Ronu has also been a devoted student of Pandit Vijay Raghav Rao. Having imbibed the best from his teachers, today Ronu displays an unlimited range of improvisatory inventions. His music springs from the relaxed, incessant and progressive exploration of the aesthetics of musical sound. Though playing a wind instrument like the flute is difficult, involving immense lung power and breath control, Ronu makes the difficult sound easy. He has performed extensively in India and abroad to much acclaim and popular response. In fact, a few leading lights of Western music have been moved to launch a series of fusion encounters, after hearing him play. An innovative composer, Ronu Majumdar has scored music for a few projects like Carrying Hope, Travelers Tale, Song of nature and Koi Akela kahan. The flute or the bansuri is associated in ancient Indian lore with Krishna, or Kanhaiya. And when Ronu's lips caress the reed, there is no lack of Gopis swaying to the heavenly sound!
