Dr. (Smt.) Teejan Bai
FolkArt - Performing Folk Art - Visual

An exponent of Pandavani, a traditional performing art form from Chattisgarh. Pandavani is the story of the Pandavas, which she renders through the medium of dance and music. She comes from the Paridheen adivasi community where girls who sang and danced were ostracized. Brought up in the midst of poverty, at Atari Patan, a small village in Chattisgarh, she defied every social norm. At first a disciple of her maternal grandfather, she trained informally under Umed Singh Deshmukh.

Recognised as India's cultural ambassador, she enthralled audiences with her unique folk singing, from England to France, to Switzerland, Germany, Turkey, Tunisia, Malta, Cyprus, Romania and Mauritius. She shot into the limelight in the 1980s. Received national and international acclaim. A Padma Shri in 1988. Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1995 and Padma Bhushan in 2003. A D.Litt from the Government of Chattisgarh.
